A number of web design trends have surfaced over the last few years. From parallax scrolling to mobile responsive, the demand is high, but so is the risk of making mistakes. Since the web and its trends are ever-evolving, you should redesign your website every 2 years. However, there are mistakes that can hurt your site’s engagement. Here are a few that we’d like to bring to your attention:

No call-to-actions.

All great sites have at least one good call-to-action. While CTA’s typically appear towards the bottom of the site, they can also appear along the top or in the navigation pane. If you are looking to convert leads, you must include some type of prompt to encourage your visitors to give you their information. Even a simple “contact us” form or a newsletter sign up is great. If you want to move your visitor along the buyer’s journey, this is one way to do it.

Not measuring analytics.

Whether you plan to use Google Analytics or another platform, it’s crucial to set up your analytics tracker so you can measure results. Without analytics, you’ll never know what is working and what isn’t.

Leaving out any whitespace.

Cluttered websites are cringe-worthy. Why not break things up? When it comes to web design, whitespace is your friend. It will help the visitor sift through the information easier and find what they are looking for.

Burying core information.

Information on your site should be easy to find. If there’s no way to cut the copy down, try using bullets and bold headings to make it easier on the eyes. Visitors want to be able to find the desired information as quickly as possible. If they can’t, they’ll leave.

Not making it mobile friendly.

Accorder to eMarketer, more than eight in 10 internet users will access the web via their mobile device. With that being said, it’s important to make your site is completely responsive – meaning that it will adjust to the users’ specific screen size.

Not verifying links.

Using bad navigation.

A good website will have a seamless navigation. Visitors should be able to find the information they want. The more clicks it takes to get from point A to point B, the more likely they will drop off in-between. Clear and concise words in the navigation (i.e. contact, services, portfolio, etc.) will be beneficial to your visitors and improve your analytics.
