A lot of things have changed over the last couple of years, so it’s a great idea to update your website. It’s a process that involves a bit of planning and research, but we’re here to help. In addition to a few of the latest trends, here are the five most important things you should incorporate into your next design.
Make it Responsive
If you’re an avid smartphone user, you’ve probably experienced a website that just didn’t work. Websites that aren’t mobile or tablet friendly can be frustrating. Especially since more people are using their devices to access the internet. A responsive design will automatically adjust the website to fit the size of the screen in question. From a large desktop monitor to an iPhone 6, the website will look good and display all content correctly.
Include at Least One CTA
A call to action is a crucial element for any business. You may already have one or two on your website, but we recommend including at least one on every page of your site. Examples of a CTA include a prompt to download a whitepaper, a link that directs to the blog, a newsletter sign up, and a link to your contact page. Common placements for a CTA can be along the navigation, in the hero image, in the footer, and in the body copy itself.
Have a Blog (and Write Often)
If you’re looking to gain more traffic to your website, a blog or news page is critical. Of course, it’s only really effective if you write often – and with industry keywords. Examples of news and blog posts include project profiles, employee spotlights, and industry news to establish yourself as a thought leader. Develop a content calendar for a couple of months out. We recommend at least two articles per month, but it will depend on your industry. In some cases, you may find it more beneficial to write once a week.

Provide Multiple Contact Options
Companies that only include a single phone number risk missing out on at least one group of potential customers. While it will depend on the service you offer, a phone call may not always be an option. Include alternate methods of contact, such as an address, an email, or a live chat option. If your business is active on social media, include links to all your profiles. And while you’re at it, always test your links and contact forms to make sure they work. An inquiry that goes into a black hole won’t do you or your customer any good.
Use Beautiful Imagery
Pictures are worth a thousand words, and it’s the high quality images that make all the difference. There are several excellent stock websites with hundreds of beautiful (and free) images to use for your website. Never pull an image from Google, as you could embark on copyright infringement. Other than that, you’ll want to make sure that any image you use is in line with your brand and style guide. If you don’t have one, consult with a brand agency to get you started.
